Boss Rush Jam 2023


Here we are, once again! Submitted with a bit more than an hour left, and hopefully with fewer bugs than my previous submissions.

The biggest challenge going into this project was my lack of experience in developing action games. I repurposed what I could use from Together Alone (Mostly the dialogue system and movement mechanics) and I had to figure out the rest.


Our original idea was to implement two bosses, one would be aggressive on Melee while another would choose to stay away and shoot from afar. Ideally, each of these bosses would have dropped an item to upgrade your weapon (More damage, faster burst, spread). However, due to time constraints, we could only focus on a single Melee boss this time.


While I worked on the AI for the boss, Ezzy focused on bringing the world of the game to life. Keeping in with the makeshift theme, they came up with designs for all stages, NPCs, and, of course, Kanna.


Some of these bad boys were added a bit late into the game, so I apologize for any wonky talk zones around them!



As for the battle itself, we were inspired by Final Fantasy XIV fights. It's like its own dance, and once you know all of the steps, you'll be able to ace it without taking any damage.



We were hoping to create a battle that would look as exciting as we could make it, but balancing is HARD. I hope that the boss battle feels just right, but I'm hoping to make balance adjustments as we add to the game in (hopefully) future updates.
